課程概述 |
Do you like foreign languages? Would you like to pick up a new language at half price? Old English is the language for you! Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, is actually a foreign language. About half of the words that comprise today's English, Modern English, were borrowed from Old French. So we wouldn't be able to talk with an Englishman of a thousand years ago, prior to this borrowing.
That said, you will recognize a lot of words in Old English. It's a lot of fun.
We will cover six chapters of grammar, which is a slow pace (half the material compared to the first time I taught this course at NTU). Every other week will be translation practice and literature (short, sexy readings in modern English translation). We're also going to watch every movie version of Beowulf ever made. Ever. |

課程目標 |
1.) Begin a basic study of Old English grammar, including phonetics, morphology, and syntax (pronunciation, noun/adj. declension, verb conjugation, basic rules of syntax).
2.) Read "greatest hits" of Old English literature in Modern English translation
3.) Write one research essay (term paper).
4.) Develop the ability to translate simple Old English prose. |

I will make all the books available free of charge as pdfs. However, I strongly recommend you buy the basic textbook, since your study experience will be better if you can read on paper and do exercises on paper.
